At La Dehesa de El Saler, Valencia, there is an artificial lake, made in 1970’s. The proposal was to urbanize a wide area building apartments, and this lake would be for recreational and sports activities. However, an environmental awareness was growing in that age, and the citizen pressure got to stop the project. Ducks and other wildlife are the lake users now.
For example, these ones. The bird with black wings (a black-winged stilt) was walking around, carefully watching the water, and plunging its head each time saw some appetising thing. Meanwhile the two seagulls watch quietly.
At the beginning, the little bird looked at me fixedly when I approached. But once decided that I wasn’t a prey (too big) and neither a predator (too slow and clumsy), he/she ignored me and continued with the work.
